MUST READ: Reforms are working per new student data

HISD

Recent district-wide exams released by HISD show that students on NES campuses demonstrated more growth in math and reading than students at non-NES campuses.

Why it matters: The intensive effort to turnaround underperforming campuses through the NES model is the cornerstone of HISD’s plan to improve student outcomes. These data provide the first indications that the reforms are resulting in academic progress.

By the numbers: According to the Houston Chronicle :

  • Third through eighth graders received between 100 and 350 points based on their achievement. The district reported that third graders' math scores increased from 183.8 in September to 192.6 in December and reading scores went from 181.8 to 189.2.

  • HISD elementary students saw their average achievement percentiles go to 48 from 45 on math and to 48 from 47 in reading. Middle school students saw a 1 percentile increase in both subjects, putting their new average at 45 in math and 46 in reading.

What’s next: District leaders are expected to announce additional NES campuses for the next academic school year in the coming weeks.
