Teachers Matter Most: New partnership between HISD and TSU

ICYMI: HISD and Texas Southern University announced a partnership to provide TSU students who are aspiring teachers the opportunity to work as paid apprentices beginning this month.

Why it matters: Teacher apprentices will be paid while receiving hands-on experience at the NES and NES-aligned campuses throughout the district.

What they’re saying: TSU sophomore Kimberly Smith said, “I believe it’s important for every college student who wants a career in education to be involved in this program. You get the prep you need to be a real classroom teacher. It will be beneficial, and you have TSU who supports you and HISD who’s ready to take you on as an employee.”

Our thought bubble: One of the most exciting aspects of this program is many of the new teachers produced by this program will be returning to teach in the very same classrooms where they were once students.

By the numbers:

  • HISD has 494 teacher apprentices working across the 85 NES and NES-aligned campuses.

  • Seven TSU students in the first cohort of the Legacy Learning Pact program will begin work this month.

  • Sixteen more will start at the beginning of the next academic year.

  • The TSU program is expected to continue to grow each year.

Catch up quick: On December 14, 2023, the HISD Board of Managers unanimously voted to become a District of Innovation (DOI). One key component of DOI is increased flexibility for the district to set the academic calendar.

What’s next: The district announced that they will plan to set the start date for the beginning of the next academic year between August 7 and August 14.

The bottom line: Quality instruction is one of the most important aspects of improving student outcomes. More instruction time will result in better student outcomes.
